Rental Cars: * I rent cars when I book my flights through Hawaiian Airlines. The rates are the lowest I have ever seen.
* I usually rent a Harley for three days from Pacific Harley Davidson on Front Street. Estimated cost is about $150 a day. Bring your motorcycle license or you will walk home.
Activity Centers: * Beware! Most of the "activity centers" in Lahaina are really come-ons for time share sales pitches. Remember that Paula (our Puunoa Beach Estates property manager) can both recommend any restaurant or activity on the island and book your tour from the office. It doesn't get any easier than that!
Luau: * The Old Lahaina Luau is probably the best Luau in town. It's just a couple of blocks north of the condo, so you can either walk or drive. There's lots of parking available.
Snorkeling: * All the equipment that you'll need to snorkel is available to rent from Boss Frogs for just a few dollars a day.
* You can snorkel in front of the condo, but there's not much to see. Black Rock is really the place to be for snorkeling. Plan to spend a day at Black Rock on Kaanapali Beach. Drive to Whaler's Village and pay a couple of dollars to park. Then walk straight through to the beach and hit the Sheraton. Frozen peas will bring millions of fish to you. The Sheraton beach bar is a perfect place to wash down the salt. In front of the Whalers Village, Leilani's on the Beach Restaurant is always good for lunch on the patio, or dinner upstairs.
* A day trip up to Hanaloa Bay is really worth the 30 minute drive. North of Kapalua, there are two beautiful bays with lots of fish to see and enjoy. You can either snorkel or scuba. The first bay you come to has a beautiful white sand beach and a parking area on the road. It also features a new path with stairs to the beach. Take lots of sun screen and a pair of beach shoes. The sand gets very hot!
* I also recommend that you take a Catamaran snorkel trip form the beach in front of the Whalers Village. Or drive the beach to Buzz's Warff, which have trips to the Molokini sea life reserve. Play with the sharks, turtles and everything else.
* Where you go is sometimes dictated by the weather, so ask first.
Exercise: * We really like to walk. If you take a left on Front Street and walk to the end and back you will get a good hour or more walk in. We try to start first thing in the morning because it gets hot in Lahaina about 10am. The Maui vacation rental also has a fitness room with cable TV, a treadmill, stationary bicycle and free weights. And AC, of course! We also have a heated pool and spa.
* Want to try to Zip Line? We love Skyline Adventures in Kaanapali. The web site warns you about being fit, but really it's just a bit of gentle walking between eight breathtaking zip lines with spectacular views of the ocean and islands.
Surfing: * For beginners, I recommend 505 Front Street. There are several companies giving lessons on the beach. Park on the street and walk to the beach. The first umbrella you come to has a guy named Ron. He is really great with kids. If you already have some surfing experience, go to the south end of Lahaina and try Puamana. The lessons are going to be more advanced and include more of the surf philosophy. If you're a seasoned surfer, then you'll already know how to find the best places.
Golf: * I don't golf myself, but if I did, I would play Kaanapali, Kapalua and Wailea. They are all spectacular.
Haleakala: * Haleakala is like standing on the moon. Make sure you take coats. It's really cold up there, and you cannot always buy coats and sweatshirts on Maui.
Groceries, etc.: * About two blocks north of the condo there is a Safeway and a Longs Drug Store. There is a good emergency medical clinic at Whaler's Village if one of your kids gets an ear infection or whatever. Say “hi” from the Larry and Sheila. We have been there a lot!
Restaurants: * Walk into Lahaina and put your name in at Kimo's for an outside table. The kids will find something they will eat. Lahaina means Hot Place, so I like to walk in just before sunset. Girard's has good food, but ask to sit on the veranda...you'll want to leave the kids behind if you go to Girard's.
* Our favorite place for a light meal is the beach side patio at Lalanies Beach Grill in Kaanapalli Beach.
* The very best food and local upscale atmosphere is Mama's Fish House on the other side of the island. Hands down, this is the best restaurant on Maui. But leave the kids at the condo; they are not going to appreciate the place and it could spoil your good time.
* In the category of “we tried it so you won't have to,” avoid Aloha Mixed Grill on Front Street.
Shopping: * Whalers' Village has very high end stores and galleries. You will find Gucci and many other exclusive labels. It's easy to melt your credit card at these prices. The ABC stores are almost everywhere and sell a little of everything from sun screen to soda pop, flip flops to t-shirts. Lahaina's Front Street is loaded with t-shirt shops and art galleries. Friday nights are especially fun because the galleries have "meet the artist" night. My wife and daughters have found a new place to leave money in Wailea called, appropriately enough, “The Shops at Wailea” located at the Grand Wailea Hotel. Once when Gina and I were there, we saw Paris Hilton, no kidding!
Relaxing: * Blow up a couple of $2.00 air mattresses from Longs and float around in the water in front of Puunoa Beach. Hiking up into the Iao Valley is great fun. Driving to Hana is way overrated.
* Remember rule number one: Leave your worries at home, pack the smallest bag you've got and have fun.
* Did I mention the mattresses?
